2009 CIEF Trap Shoot . . .
A Fun, Feast of a Fund-Raiser!
November is a time for Thanks Giving . . . for sharing family, activities and feasting.
How appropriate that November also embraces the annual CIEF Trap Shoot, where all of the above occur in abundance!
In this instance, family is a segment of our construction industry that shares feelings ranging from a ‘passion for marksmanship’ to an ‘intrigue for target shooting’ – shotgun style. Our trap shoot activity addresses this full range of interest and varying levels of expertise, by sorting teams into Novice and Advance categories following warm-ups and the first competetive round.
Thus, regardless of skill-set, all participants can get their competitive juices flowing and enjoy the event. And if a good appetite is whipped up during the second round of shooting, all-the-better to savor Roy’s Premium BBQ chicken & ribs feast served up for lunch! See a competition recap and team photos below.
Thanks Giving becomes the reality for CIEF beneficiaries, when as a result of this event, thousands of dollars are added to our funds to enhance the future workforce for our industry!
With your help, CIEF supports a variety of effective programs:

SPONSORS
CIEF extends heartfelt thanks to our supportive sponsors and all participants in these troubled economic times!
F. Rodgers president Art Gardner directed his firm’s support through a Sharpshooter sponsorship, and in addition to his shooters, was also represented by scorekeepers Jonathan Young and Jeremy Wright as event volunteers.
And though business-of-the-day demands pulled president Mike Kimmel away from his repeat participation following last year’s inaugural Trap Shoot, Mike sustained Kimmel Construction financial support through a Marksman sponsorship and directed his shooter slots to SBE Pac (in whose affairs Mike has been very active and instrumental as an SRBX Board Member).
Special gratitude is also extended to Lawson Mechanical for “leadership by example” – not only entering three of their own teams, but also promoting our event among suppliers and other industry connections, resulting in two additional team registrations. In recognition, we would like to acknowledge John Vroman of Lawson’s purchasing department as MVP of our 2009 CIEF Trap Shoot (in photo below, right). While functioning as captain of Advance Division champs, LM2, John directly impacted 50% of entry fee revenue for this vital fund-raiser!
Thanks also to Lawson Vice President and CIEF Trustee, Rod Barbour, who after competing on the LM1 Team, performed double duty as Event MC – seen acknowledging sponsors, participants, and award-winning teams in the photo below, left.
PARTICIPANTS
A total of ten teams and 50 shooters participated in the 2009 CIEF Trap Shoot.
Novice Division Recap
Four teams competed in the enthusiast Novice Division – two newcomers in Teichert-Roseville and the combo team of Cal-Steam/Victaulic (a distributor/manufacturer tandem from the Lawson Mechanical supply stream) – and two repeaters from the inaugural event last year: California Service Tools and SBE Pac.
Somebody had to provide foundational support, and the ardent though mostly new shooters on the SBE Pac team took that burden on their Community Clay Cruncher shoulders – posting scores of 41 and 37 out of 125 team targets per round.
Cal-Steam/Victaulic concluded their maiden voyage in this CIEF event with consistent 56 and 53 efforts that they plan to build on in 2010.
Not only did California Service Tools territory manager Mike Thorpe provide high-quality safety glasses and earplugs for the second consecutive year, but his team also came in as defending Novice Division champs!
Completing their group at the last minute by adding Justine Aban (ACE Mentor admin who assisted event registration), the CalService Toolers made the finals with competitive round scores of 58 and 66 – to face the newcomers' squad from Teichert’s Roseville Office, captained by Nicole Chappell.
In the final-round Shoot-Off, Nicole plus Brian Roth, Alex Elmendorf, Scott Lewis and Chris Barkley followed their initial-round scores of 62 & 54 with a 67 – outdistancing the Toolers’ final round 53, to bring home the booty of Novice Champions (see photo below).

Advance Division Recap
With first-round classification scores ranging from 74 to 98, six teams comprised the Advance Division.
Repeat participants from 2008 – Clark & Sullivan Builders, HMH Builders and Lawson Mechanical Contractors – were joined by experienced shooters from long-time SRBX specialty contractor F. Rodgers, and a relative newcomer to the region (though here-to-stay as a new Builders Exchange member) Penta Building Group.
Clark & Sullivan and F. Rodgers consolidated as a team, producing first and second round scores of 74 & 86. Lawson Mechanical’s UCD SESP squad hit 90 & 84, while the Penta Clay Pounders turned in a very consistent 83 & 84 combo — scoring which placed these teams in the number 4, 5 and 6 positions on the final scoreboard.
LM1 Trappers burst 84 and 87 of their respective 125 clay birds in each competitive round, finishing third.
Returning 2008 3rd place finishers, HMH Clay Crushers recorded totals of 75 & 95 in the preliminary shooting, and then – despite having to deal with a reluctant and inconsistent voice activated target launcher in the finals – managed a very respectable 84 in the shoot-off to finish second. Congratulations to the team of Matt Herrera, Rusty Ott, Stan Allwardt, Tim Mathewson and Mr. McCann, who managed to upgrade last year’s finish by one place.
The “early line” on HMH to continue the trend and compete successfully again in 2010 is looking good!
Sweeping into the 2009 Advance Division Championship was Lawson Mechanical’s LM2 team – assembled by inspirational captain John Vroman, with amazingly consistent (if not hot-shooting) teammates Greg Casaway, Brian Elia, Fred Demichelis and Gary Peck. Though reluctant to describe their performance as truly torrid marksmanship by the squad’s high standards, this team surely competed with calm and amazing grace in posting three-round scores of 98, 99 and 100 out of each set of 125 targets launched!
